Belgians with a valid and activated Belgian identity card can request civil status extracts and copies from the website Mon Dossier - Registre national - Direction générale Identité et Affaires citoyennes of the Federal Public Service Home Affairs.
With Mon Dossier/Mijn Dossier, you can download or print electronic certificates from the population register free of charge, and download or print free of charge civil status certificates issued after 31 March 2019.
Copies and extracts of birth and marriage certificates can be obtained from the JustOnWeb portal of the Federal Public Service Justice.
You can also obtain the following consular certificates in one of the three national languages from the consular post where you are registered:
- certificate of civil status;
- certificate of family composition;
- certificate of registration;
- certificate of nationality;
- certificate of residence;
- certificate of residence with history ;
The application can be submitted by postal mail to the Belgian Consulate General in Montreal, containing the following items:
- a self-addressed, stamped envelope ;
- a postal order or certified cheque: you can find the required amount here Consular fees & Payment methods | FPS Foreign Affairs - Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation ;
- a copy of the applicant's (Belgian) identity document;
- a brief written explanation of the desired certificate and the desired national language.
Please note that these certificates cost half the amount indicated in the consular rates if they are to be presented to a Belgian administrative authority or to Belgian social security.
